"An internal error has occurred. Report a bug?"

I am a teacher, and many of my students are receiving internal errors when they are working on their project. This error prevents them from opening the project file and from continuing to work on their project. It is extremely unclear as to what is causing this error. My students claim they switched to designer view, then a bug appears and kicks them out of their project. They are then unable to access their project and lose all progress.

This URL allows you to open AI2 to the Project List, without opening any project.
http://ai2a.appinventor.mit.edu/?autoload=false
From that list, you can request Exports of Projects without trying to open them.

If you require repair assistance, upload the aia file here.

I’ve tried the link and importing the file, and it still won’t load. I have students who constantly have this problem. Is there anything I can do to prevent this problem from happening, and how can they retrieve their files?

Hi @Brianna_Britt

Could you please share a screen recording? It would help us understand the problem.

Since many students, but not all, have this problem, could you share here one .aia of those who have the problem ? Do they (those who have the problem) use extensions ? The problem arises only at school or if they try to open the project at home, it works ? Did the students save the back-up (.aia files) before the problem arises ? If yes, please post also one of those .aia so to allow a comparison between the two.

I facing same issue

Please describe a little more your problem:

  • is it with a single project/aia ( in this case export the aia as explained in post 4 )?
  • are you able to create a new project ( follow link in post 4 and click on ā€œnew projectā€ )?
  • what is the address in the browser’s address bar ( starts with ai2a.appinventor.mit.edu )?
  • did you try to logout and login again
  • did you try connecting using different pc/phone?
  • ….

MiniGolf.aia (3.1 KB)

I am teaching and this has occurred with two students as well. Both have had to start the project over completely because the file cannot be opened. For the file attached, I used the autoload false to download the corrupted .aia file, but when I imported to a new file it still gave the error- internal bug found and would not open. I have been using this program for ten years and have not had this issue, so I do not believe it is user error.

The problem isn’t on my account and the students don’t have extensions on their browser. We’ve tried switching browsers and devices, but the error still exists. Luckily, my students haven’t been running into this issue for the past two days, but I don’t know why the error occurs.

We found a way to download the file, but when we upload it, we receive the same error.

The Balll in the Screen seems to have fallen out of its Canvas, if we look in the JSON of Screen1.scm

Please upload here one of these files ( how many are? )

P.S.

Do you mean that if you import the aia in your account it loads ( without errors )?

I think I have got the bug causing this error, creating a PR for this within few mins.

PS: I have made a fix and now I am able to open this project

The .scm file is malformed because we can drag and drop the ball from SourceStructureExplorer, and it doesn't check if the target container can accept the source or not.

That means, it bypass the special restriction of ball's parent container being the canvas only. So now if you open your project again, it loads the malformed .scm file and throws error.

A PR has been created, users with malformed .scm files should be able to open and fix their project.

Good news: you have found this nasty error.

Bad news: we have other work for you ; - ) as the same happens also in lot of other cases.

I mean you can not only move a ball or an imagesprite out of a canvas ( a trendline out of a chart, a marker out of a map ) but you can also do the opposite, move a button inside a canvas, a verticalarrangement inside a map.

So, I’d say, same check done when inserting new components ( as you can’t insert a ball outside a canvas ) should be performed while moving/rearranging components.

I've another good news, this is also taken care of : )
The code checks the compatibility for every component when you try to move them in right SourceStructureExplorer.

Good
