I cannot display any web page in it. Very briefly a small greay rectangle appears and then disappears. But if it has any text in it then it is unreadable.

You appear to be trying to mix the web component with the webviewer. They are two different things...
Try webviewer on its own without any other blocks:
You cannot use 'user interface'->'webviewer' and 'connectivity'->'web' is the same app together?
A correct url starts with http or https
