Look Extension: Compatible Devices

Good afternoon!

My school is committed to App Inventor as a teaching tool, and we are hoping to finally upgrade our tablet cart to use the newest features for the foreseeable future. Right now we are using the Galaxy Tab A from 2017 running Android v9.

I have read the list of devices that are known to be compatible with the Look Extension and other AI features, but I imagine that not every tablet from the last 5 years has been added to the list. I searched these forums too and it seems that the last comments about this list were made 4-5 years ago. I’m wondering if anyone can recommend a tablet on the lower price range that you know to be compatible with these features. I also asked around my teaching network, so I’ll share any of their intel here

Modified LookExtension which works on more devices

LookExtension is a very useful extension to classify objects. However, it works on a limited number of Android devices and it is not easy to predict which device is supported. We modified LookExtension to use the CPU backend instead of the GPU backend if GPU is not supported so that it will work on all devices, although the inference speed will be much slower with CPU backend. Right now we are using the Galaxy Tab A from 2017 running Android v9.

Since the modified LookExtension works on a Nexus 5 and a Galaxy 4 and even on a Moto G Play, it should also work on the Galaxy Tab A 2017 with Android 9, which has better hardware.
