Currently, there is no built in method to run app Inventor apps in the background, however, You can use this extension:

• BackgroundTasks Extension [PAID] by Atom_Developer

Note: there is an extension by vknow360 here as well: Background Tasks, but unfortunately, it isn't yet completed
