Fixed-width column divisions within listview?

I want to use listview to display records from a file, where there are distinct columns visible with a visible divider from one column to the next as you normally get with any list, such as many windows programs like task manager for example, or a typical spreadsheet. How can I achieve this in listview, which as far as I can tell only has a single column. If you're using a proportional font then you can't rely on a fixed number of character places because the width of each characters varies. Any hints gratefully received.
