The test is performed by installing the Companion on your iOS device and testing the project through it.
Therefore you do not need to be a beta tester

To me it seems a bit difficult to test iOS capability without an iOS device.

The others are correct. You need an iOS device to be eligible for testing on iOS.

Apple doesn't publish an iOS emulator. It publishes a simulator as part of the iOS development tools, which runs x86 versions of the iOS frameworks on macOS. Builds for the simulator are completely different than builds for the App Store/TestFlight. AFAIK, there isn't any sanctioned emulator for iOS.
