When using camera can I save images to the phones main image gallery? If so how? Presumably I can then retrieve them using image picker?

Yes, images taken by your camera should be available through the imagepicker. Where your images are saved by the camera event may depend on your device.
If you need to move them / rename them, then use Taifun’s File Extension to do this, and you may need the Gallery Refresh tool from Taifun’s Tools Extension
