This is not a serious issue or complaint, but just a side note to teachers:
I’ve been using the Presidents Quiz for many years, as it’s a great tutorial to teach several things simultaneously. Today, one of my students muddled the images (Nixon and Carter) - because he didn’t recognise the presidents. Granted, I’m not in the USA, but, still, I’m also not American and yet I recognised them, but we need to realise that times have changed. Yes, we’re getting old :-(.
Although the image file names are useful, they don’t match the answers precisely, and the order in which they appear in the tutorial is not the same order of the answers [edit: at the top of the tutorial; the order is correct later, in the code], so students might just follow the incorrect order.
For my next semester, I will host the images locally, and change their file names so that they match the answers. Times change :-/
If you are looking for an updated Quiz app, this one I made for Technovation Girls. It doesn’t include images but it goes over making a simple quiz in App Inventor.
I’ll still keep the original tutorial (just with image file name changes), because it’s a great tutorial. But I will add stuff from the later work also.
Don’t miss this opportunity to get involved with your students. Consider updating (older tutorial examples) with updated photos and controls). The images of the presidents and other free images are found in the provided link. Do the re-coding as a class project/exercise perhaps or share your code with other educators posting aia and code ‘fixes’ to the App Showcase or writing a tutorial and posting to Tutorials and Guides topics.
Use the forum The MIT App Inventor Help to request suggestions and advice to ‘renew’ older apps that misbehave on newer hardware.
